What are the Technical Rules for Hazardous Substances (TRGS)?

The Technical Rules for Hazardous Substances (TRGS) are guidelines published by the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) in Germany. They specify the requirements of the Hazardous Substances Ordinance in concrete terms and provide practical guidance for companies. The aim of the TRGS is to protect the health and safety of employees, prevent accidents, and protect the environment.

Electrostatic discharge is a major topic in the Technical Rules for Hazardous Substances. It refers to the accumulation of electrical charges on the surface of materials. In many industrial environments, electrostatic charging is virtually unavoidable. However, these charges pose hazards that can be prevented or minimized through proper handling. If electrostatic charges are not managed properly, sparks may form, which can then lead to ignition.

But how does electrostatic charge arise? There are various ways in which an electrostatic charge can develop. For one, it can arise through friction. When two different materials are rubbed together and then separated, electrons are transferred from one material to the other (triboelectric effect). On the other hand, a charge can develop when two materials come into contact with each other and are then separated again. This does not require friction (contact charging). Humidity and temperature can also influence electrostatic charging.

TRGS 727 – Prevention of Ignition Hazards Caused by Electrostatic Charges

TRGS 727 is part of the Technical Rules for Hazardous Substances. It replaces and continues TRBS 2153. This regulation addresses the assessment and prevention of ignition hazards resulting from electrostatic charges in potentially explosive atmospheres, as well as the selection and implementation of protective measures to prevent these hazards.

In industrial environments, the risk of electrostatic charges is not uncommon. This is because contact between materials and their subsequent separation can quickly lead to electrostatic charging. Especially in areas where flammable substances are present, this is a phenomenon that must be avoided at all costs. If these charges cannot be safely dissipated, sparks may occur that can ignite flammable atmospheres. To minimize these hazards, TRGS 727 provides several guidelines. It also includes specific regulations for hoses. This is because the use of hoses is indispensable in many industrial processes, such as the transport of gases or liquids. However, they can also be potential sources of electrostatic charges. To ensure safety, the requirements of TRGS 727 must be strictly adhered to.

These Guidelines Include:

• When transporting bulk materials or hazardous substances, hoses that are conductive or antistatic should be used to prevent or safely dissipate electrostatic charges.
• In addition, the hoses should be labeled so that their properties are clearly identifiable to everyone.
• Hoses used to transport flammable or conductive liquids must be grounded.
• Insulation of certain sections must also be prevented, as this hinders the dissipation of the charge.
• When using couplings or other connectors, it must be ensured that these are also conductive. This is the only way to guarantee continuous grounding.
• High flow rates can also lead to electrostatic charging or even increase it. It is therefore important to control the flow rate and keep it within a safe range.
• Controlling the temperature is also a relevant measure for preventing ignition hazards.
• Furthermore, it is important that the hoses and their connections are regularly checked and inspected.
